Chapter
One
Success
No matter how differently
we define it, we all strive for success.
We spend innumerable
hours trying our hardest to attain it because we believe that
success brings along happiness.
We are convinced that
we can only be happy if we're successful - and for good reason.
The most relevant way of defining personal success is in terms
of satisfying our personal desires and needs. If we are successful
at that, then happiness naturally follows. If not, happiness
eludes our grasp and we continually consider ourselves as not
succeeding at life. We may not be failing, but we are definitely
not succeeding.
Some of us dream of
great financial success. Others desire to make a significant
contribution to mankind, which brings fame and recognition as
well as benefiting others. Still others want to do the very best
they can, whether or not this is ever noticed by anyone else,
because it is the right thing to do.
No matter how we measure
success, we cannot leave out our dreams. For it is on their foundation
that we continue to motivate ourselves. Dreams are the North
Star on our emotional compass. Without them we would either move
in empty circles or never move in the first place. But dreams
alone are of little value without the right tools to make them
real. If we don't put them into action, our dreams are little
more than sources of cruel frustration.
We are going to work
together in the next pages - not to abandon our dreams, hopes
and ideals, because we need them. But, rather, we will harness
the true power of our dreams by connecting them to the proper
tools. Once this connection has been made, our personal and professional
lives will be transformed. First, we will examine just what these
tools are. In the process, we will discover why so many of us
fail to attain success. This will lead us to understand why there
is such a gap between our everyday experiences and those experiences
we desire. Then we can begin to understand why our personal motivation
fails us when we need it most. We'll see why some people fulfill
their dreams of success and happiness, while others are swallowed
up in the swamp of failure and despair.
This search, this guided expedition, will at all times be highly
personal - if you let it. Be courageous and let this apply to
all of your thought and behavior. After all, you must find the
right motivation for you even if it is totally at odds with someone
else. It must fit your needs, your lifestyle and outlook. It
must feel right to your heart and still make sense to your mind.
Now is the time for
you to take this journey. Our trip will be fun and exciting.
It will be as packed with adventure as any trip you've ever taken
because it will take you to the fringes of your imagination.
And the benefits will be as real and as tangible as you have
the insight and courage to realize.
There are risks and
rewards along the journey. There will be surprises and unexpected
perils. But, come along with me- you're worth it. Your dreams
have been waiting for you to catch up with them long enough.
