Chapter Ten

Success And Passion

Every successful person is passionate about success.

Even if that person was not aware that they had passion, they had a love affair with their life and what they were doing.

They were committed to their tasks to such a degree that nothing else mattered. Passion scoffs at obstacles and laughs at barriers. It welcomes the most forbidding challenges. Passion unleashes an energy within us, which sweeps all else before it. It refutes negative objections and mocks all the silly reasons why the project cannot possibly work.

Passion demonstrates its power and proves just what can be accomplished. Every famous scientist or artist has known this deep in his heart. Their lives are inspirational largely because of passion. They persevere because they are passionate.

What you truly love, you pursue with a steady eye and a willing heart. Passion turns work into play and transforms routine tasks into exhilarating exercises. These are automatic, free-flowing and spontaneous. It does not side-step effort or high-energy exertion. Passion has its own labors and they can be real energy burners.

When you are passionate about something, you want to get on with it. You are drawn to activities that are only related to it. Our focus is on it without any conscious effort. It's harder to be distracted from it than to be attracted to a distant subject.

Now you understand why passion is linked with success. Nothing else can draw out such dedication to a given cause. Read any biography about a successful person and you'll read about passion. There's a forward thrust to their lives, a momentum which carries them along, blasting obstructions to smithereens.

The successful person is involved with projects, goals and enterprises and literally loves them. They strike enemies out of the way. That's passion. But it can't be faked. You have to really feel it from your depths. You either feel it or you don't. If you don't, all the sham and pretense in the world won't fool anybody. Does this relate to your career, your marriage, or other romance?

If there's no passion there, you will not find success there either. You may have had it and lost it or you never really had passion, but to succeed, you have to have it and keep it.
Can you understand now why your career hasn't succeeded? Why your relationships haven't brought fulfillment? Without passion, everything you do is transformed. What could have brought you joy, now brings boredom

The need for passion helps to explain a common phenomenon these days. We've all read about someone who turned a hobby into a spectacular success. What happened? The person decided to pursue the route of passion. The unhappy lawyer is now the successful and happy fisherman. The tense salesman is now a jolly gentleman farmer.

This doesn't mean you have to change careers to discover passion. You may just have to realign your priorities a bit. Shift the emphasis of what you're doing and you may discover that passionate feeling. Use that newfound imagination of yours. Are you passionate about your career? Is it obvious to everyone that you love this profession? Or are you most excited about your income, short hours, or something not related to your love of your job? Take a good, long look at yourself. Put the "video" of you life into the VCR of introspection and watch on the edge of your seat as you review you.

Is there any passion anywhere? Even romantic passion can give you some clues. When was the last time you felt passion? Why has it been so long? Did someone else's passion bring you into this profession? Someone like your father, and now you're acting out the script he wrote. Perhaps your mother wanted you to be what you are acting out but this isn't your passion.

Once you realize the significant role played by passion in any setting, you can get a better grasp of the dynamics underlying your hoped-for but inexperienced success. The gaps and dead spots in your life are now revealed.

At worst, once your personal inventory is completed, you'll see the need for a new hobby or outside interest. Even if you feel you can't leave your profession, you can find within it new ways of triggering your interest and passion.

Once you see that passion is a part of the successful person's basic motivation, you can put things in better perspective. You can understand your life and career more clearly than before. You can discover a totally new approach to what hasn't been working.
